RES Park – A Community Gathering Space in Rockport

The Lesher Family Foundation has committed $3 million to the design and construction of RES Park in Rockport, Maine, a vibrant public space that fosters community connections and equitable outdoor access. In addition to funding the park’s creation, we are actively working to establish a conservancy that will ensure its long-term preservation, programming, and maintenance.

Our Vision for RES Park:

  • A beautiful, inclusive gathering place that welcomes everyone.

  • Features that promote recreation, the arts, sustainability, and wellness.

  • A long-term commitment to public access, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.

The Importance of Public Green Spaces

Public green spaces, such as parks and community gardens, play a crucial role in enhancing the well-being of individuals and communities. They offer numerous benefits, including: <Cite>

1. Enhancing Mental and Physical Health

  • Mental Health: Access to green spaces is associated with reduced stress, improved mood, and overall psychological well-being. Studies have shown that individuals with greater access to green areas report better mental health outcomes. source

  • Physical Health: Green spaces encourage physical activity, which can help prevent chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. People who engage in physical activity in natural environments at least once a week have about half the risk of poor mental health compared to those who do not. source

2. Fostering Social Cohesion

Parks serve as communal areas where individuals can interact, strengthening community bonds and fostering a sense of belonging. Urban parks, as places of social interaction, can enhance people's sense of security and belonging, contributing to improved mental health. source

3. Boosting Local Economies

Investments in parks can lead to increased property values, higher municipal revenues, and economic revitalization. For example, local park and recreation agencies generated more than $201 billion in economic activity and supported over 1.1 million jobs in 2021. source

4. Environmental Benefits

Green spaces improve air and water quality, reduce urban heat islands, and support biodiversity. They play a vital role in mitigating environmental challenges in urban settings. source
